3 Ways to Tackle Negative Comments about Natural Curls

A few weeks ago I posted a little blurb on my Instagram page about a comment I received on my natural hair.  Let me just say I get comments all the time about my hair mostly good, with the occasional “can I touch your hair” fascinated crazy folks.

This time the comment was much different compared to other comments I’ve ever received about my natural hair.

So the story plays out in a professional office setting, where I was greeted by a man, my customer. Eager to help the man I greeted him, asked him to take a seat and went to work.

Within minutes of helping the man, he abruptly stops the conversation and leans in towards me and whispers can he ask me a question.

With the straightest face, this man asks “how can you be so happy with your hair so nappy”, and then begins to laugh hysterically.

Now for those of you who do not know me, I love to laugh and smile a lot! Honestly, I can think of so many smile-worthy things to be happy about right now. Guess you can say it’s good for the soul.

Needless to say, I was baffled, this man nearly had the same hair texture as mine. My thoughts there’s no remedy for ignorance-and sir quite frankly I’m happy nappy!

So it got me thinking, do you get stuck when approached with similar negativity about your natural curls? Well, if so here are my top 3 ways to tackle negative comments about natural curls.

  1. Be positive: I have never thought of my hair as being anything less than beautiful. I am proud of my hair and my families long history of diversified hair textures.  Besides most of the time, the person with the negative comment doesn’t realize they’re insecure and your confidence in self-expression makes them feel uneasy.
  2. School them: Excuse me! Mr. or Ms. Negative, aren’t you comfortable with your hair? How dare you scrutinize my hair? I would say this if I had to teach them a thing or two. In the end it’s your hair,  love on it, case closed.
  3. Ignore them: Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt used to say “no one can make you feel inferior without your consent”. Let the nay sayers have a circus by themselves, while you keep it moving. You are confident, and wear the best crown there is. Really, I mean it. Who wouldn’t want to have hair that defies gravity?

Hope this helps you get rid of the bad vibes the next time they come around.

Do you do something different when you are confronted with hate comments about natural hair? Is there something you say often or on the fly? I would love to hear from you.

‘Till next time stay confident and slay on,
