I am always talking about how eating a well- balanced diet is one of the first steps in having bomb AH healthy natural hair (Wellness). In addition, there are some amazing benefits when adding pure whole food ingredients to your natural hair.
Just a word of caution, there will be HATERS (having anger toward everyone reaching success) that will give you all kinds of grief about DIY’s. Like how they’re not safe and they don’t work.
I’ve had the chance to share some of my DIY recipes with other curly heads like myself, and I wish I could say everyone is as enthused as I am about home recipes. Most could care less about taking what looks like smoothies from Jamba Juice and adding it to their hair care routine.
However, the rest of those women I’ve shared recipes with have been making their own DIY’s for years, and are all about shiny healthy hair. So before you DIY, there are a few things you may want to consider before jumping in.
What you should be asking yourself before you DIY your hair.
-
- Ok so you want to make DIY hair products? I say go for it! Many of my friends are not natives to the USA, and I find it fascinating how resourceful their culture is in creating richly dense whole food hair care products that are 1,000% safe for your hair, for the environment and better yet if they wanted to, they could eat it!
- I don’t know if you’ve noticed but, some of the major hair brands are starting to raise their prices. What’s even crazier is the most expensive items seem to be deep conditioners and masks. Some of these can range from $20-35 per jar or bottle.
These are the staples of healthy hair. Who are they kidding? By chance, have you seen the ingredients on your favorite product? If so, you’ll see some of the items listed you already have in your kitchen. Which leads me to my next point.
3. The best part about making your own DIY recipes is you’re in control of every ingredient that goes into your mix. Not a single ingredient has alcohol in it (as you’ll find is very common for most shelf bought items) which eventually dries out your hair. Your list of DIY ingredients will not include words only a chem teacher could decipher either!
No, just pure natural foods like coconut oil and bananas which are great for building stronger less fragile hair.

One of my favorite ingredients to use is Avocados, they’re great for keeping your hair moisturized and full of protein. Another one of my favorites is Guava fruit. It’s loaded with Vitamin C, to help reduce hair breakage. From scents, colors, and textures your DIY’s can get pretty creative.

4. OK, I’ve got you all pumped about DIY’s! Great. One thing most people don’t mention is what are the best containers for DIY hair products.
After some trial and error over the last few years I’ve found:
-
- Tins are great for pomades and edge controls (see pic above). Plus they’re easier to clean when it’s time to refill.
- Bottles with pumps or squeezable tops work well for shampoos, conditioners, creams, and curl definition products. For example flaxseed gel.
- Wider mason jars versus taller ones are perfect for pre-poos, masks, and deep conditioners.
Now, I understand for some reading this post, it’s all about convenience purchasing store products, while others want to know what they’re using. No shame either way. With that, I’d love to hear your take on DIYs. Have you tried any? Did they work?
Until next time, make magic with your hair,
