I know I’m not the only natural that doesn’t like to use heat to straighten her hair, right?!

Figuring a style that works best on straight hair is easy, but getting to straight hair from curly hair, now that takes work and serious arm muscle.

What if I told you there’s an easier way, that’s healthy and won’t damage your hair would you try it?

Of course, you would, because if you’re anything like me you’re not trying to cut any more hair off due to heat damage.

*Disclaimer: Everyone’s hair is different and in no way can you achieve bone straight hair (to my knowledge) without heat or some sort of heated tool-but it is possible to get d–n near close with this method.

So don’t panic, someone with type 3a hair may achieve different results then someone with type 4c hair.

The method

Since November 2018, I’ve been secretly rocking this stretched-out look, and I have to say it’s all thanks to the Banding Method. A method most of us curly heads grew up with our mom’s doing to our hair or something comparable to it.

The Banding Method is an alternative way to straighten hair without using heat. This is achieved by several hair ties banded or tied to stretch your hair helping to retain length as it dries. I realize for some of you this is your first time hearing about this method. If you need a visual example, hop over to my YouTube channel below.

Start with clean hair

Starting off with freshly washed shampooed and conditioned hair will give you the best results when naturally stretching your hair. Be sure that you’ve completely detangled your hair. Use a wide-tooth comb, teezer brush, or your fingers.

Dry and seal your hair

In addition to clean hair, you want to make sure you remove any water from your hair as much as possible. The best way to draw water and moisture out of your hair is by using a microfiber towel.

This ensures your hair will be free of heat damage and frizz. Finally, you’ll need add a leave in conditioner to prep your hair and seal it with oil. I prefer JBCO, it’s packed with a number of benefits all aiding in healthier hair, and it will leave your hair shiny once it dries.

Begin banding

After sealing your hair with an oil or serum, begin to separate your hair off into medium manageable sections. Starting with one of the sections place your detangled hair into a hair tie as if you were planning to do a pigtail.

Directly under the first hair tie, stretch hair and place through another hair tie securing your hair ties flow like a band back to back with little to no gaps in between them. Once you reach the end of the hair (pigtail) take the ends and fold over the last hair tie to maintain moisture and avoid stringy ends.

Repeat for the entire head

The take down

Your hair should dry overnight if it doesn’t give it another few hours. Once completely dry gently remove hair ties. Try to avoid hair snagging when removing hair ties. Separate or shake your hair and honey look at that LENGTH.

Tell me have you tried this method before? Do you have some other method you use? Let me know in the comments section below. Don’t forget sharing is caring.
